Today was quiet,
at the bookstore,
vacations,
have started.
July is,
vacation,
month,
in Quebec,
traditionally,
the hottest month,
of the year,
for people who,
spend months,
in subzero temperatures,
sun worship,
is important,
read,
essential.
Not me, I’m a butch and we all know what season is butch season, right?
Quiet time,
is reading time,
I had a copy of,
Malcolm Gladwell’s,
The Tipping Point,
lying around,
so I figured,
here’s my chance,
to read it.
Used book dealers rarely read the most recent and talked about books -well, we can read parts, but, we need to sell them, before their popularity declines, it is the nature of the business, it’s ok, I prefer older more obscure books, anyway:-)
I’ve been reading,
Gladwell,
in The New Yorker,
for a few years,
now,
and I’ve seen him,
interviewed on,
Charlie Rose,
a few times,
Charlie Rose on PBS or online, without a doubt, the best interviewer around, he has the essential elements, he is a gentleman possessing insatiable curiosity, if you have never seen him, you must.
I’m sure many of you,
have read Gladwell,
and I’m not going to,
review his book,
I just wanted to say,
that reading it,
brought to mind,
the best of discussions,
the best of college lectures,
I was riveted,
and,
engaged,
his work,
made me want to,
read more non-fiction,
and it made me,
think.
It also brought me back,
to a simpler time,
in my life.
One of the essays,
discusses,
Sesame Street,
and,
Blue’s Clues,
and how they,
revolutionised,
children’s television,
I’m way too old,
for Blue’s Clues,
I’ve seen it,
as an adult,
and,
therefore,
don’t get it:-)
But,
Sesame Street,
wow,
that belongs,
to my childhood,
those Muppets,
and,
Gordon,
and Mr Roper,
I knew them.
I love,
the intelligence of,
Kermit,
the naiveté,
of Big Bird,
the optimism,
of Grover,
and the,
feisty indignation,
of,
Oscar the Grouch.
But,
my hero,
my favourite,
when I was a kid,
because he was blue,
and a creature,
of few words,
was,
Cookie Monster.
I still love,
Cookie,
mostly,
for his,
Joie De Vivre.
I read,
a few years ago,
that because,
of childhood,
obesity rates,
Cookie Monster,
was going to eat,
fruit.
My first thought,
was,
the whole world,
has gone,
MAD!!
I like fruit,
but,
really,
isn’t it a parent’s,
job,
to monitor,
how many cookies,
their kids eat,
??!!?!!???
I don’t know what,
became,
of that insanity,
I just know,
that,
for a few minutes,
while reading Gladwell’s book,
I was a,
giggling kid,
sitting cross legged,
in front of the,
old Zenith television,
with,
Cookie.
<Sigh>
Who’s your favourite?
Later Girls,
BB
I loved cookie monster! nom nom cookies. Silly how it’s all about health now – laaaame 🙂
A simple friendly, cookie loving beast, what more can you ask for? and bonus he’s blue:-)
I’ve always liked Bert & Ernie, I could relate to both of them, at the same time.
yeah, I get that, the whimsical and the cerebral, the child full of wonder and the responsible adult. Good choice:-)
OK. So after that comment I actually made zucchini chocolate chip cookies last night… they are very tasty though and a good compromise 😉
Snuffleupagus is number one — an introvert and all; then Grover (specially his near + Far routine) then Cookie Monster, the Count Chocula…. and I am still waiting for a female muppet hero.
And Gladwell is interesting: raises lots of things to think about.
As long as they are cookies, they can be fruit or vegetable ladden:-)
Good choices I too love Grover he’s fun and a little neurotic, in a good way:-)
I’m going to read more Gladwell, he makes me think and explains things in clear and simple prose.
