It looks like,
it’s going to be,
a nice day.
The Habs have,
lost their,
first three,
pre-season matches,
but,
hey that’s what,
pre-season is for,
working out the kinks,
we must keep the faith,
Go Habs Go!!
This morning,
I was hanging out,
at the virtual ‘water cooler’
face book:-)
and one of my,
buddies,
weird to say friends,
about people you hardly,
or don’t,
know,
I digress,
the subject,
was the upcoming release,
of the new Batwoman comic,
and how the character,
is an out lesbian.
First thought?
Super cool!!
quickly followed,
by,
‘why do I care?’
You see,
I have never been,
a reader of comics,
I did for a while,
become a reader of
graphic novels,
even became quite,
enamored of,
American Splendor,
Harvey Pekar’s,
strange file clerk,
adventures,
in the glamourous city,
of Cleveland.
I liked,
the whole slice of life,
of the neurotic would be,
artist.
My favourite,
of the graphic novel series,
was,
Strangers In Paradise,
the adventures of the,
angry, irreverent Katchou,
and the more conventional,
Francine,
the woman Katchou,
secretly loves,
and,
lusts after.
But,
superheros,
have never been,
my thing,
I watch the movies,
Batman,
Superman,
Spiderman,
but never the comics,
I found them to be,
male oriented.
A lesbian superhero?
I have to admit,
I’m intrigued:-)
But, why?
Does my need for,
lesbian representation,
in a more mainstream,
cultural context,
have me consider,
buying a comic book?
Comic books aren’t really,
mainstream are they?
Hmm, that’s what you call,
food for thought:-)
What do you think?
Later girls,
BB
I agree completely. I will pay closer attention to something with lesbian content, even if it’s something I’m not usually interested in, just because it’s lesbian.
I wonder if a straight person has ever thought, “I’d love to see a straight couple holding hands around here.”
I remember this woman I knew, saying in reference to Gay Pride Week ‘Iwish there was a heterosexual pride week’
so I told her ‘that would be the other 51 weeks a year’,
some people have no idea of the invisibility of others and how hungry those others are to see themselves reflected in the mainstream.
That being said, it certainly has improved, hasn’t it??
Cool. Although I think that a gay Batwoman is pretty ok, I don’t think that would get me to buy the comic book. I would however go to see the movie…
What?! It’s hockey time already?!!! Didn’t they just stop playing? It’s too hot for hockey, BUT, ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!!:-)
Believe it or not ‘we’ play hockey from October to to April (regular season) and the playoffs can run well into June:-)
I like football, but, I don’t watch it much I like underdog teams. It is cool about Batwoman huh?
What is especially great about a gay Batwoman, is that, there will be even more fanfic out there. Often the fanfic is much better than the thing that spawns it, so I’m looking forward to seeing what the fans do with it.
Hmmm… personally I would prefer Jean Grey/Phoenix to be a lesbian (of X-Men). I have a thing for mutants. ;-). Today’s comics are somewhat disappointing, but I LOVED them as a kid, all of them.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out, and how long it takes to normalize. As in no big deal. Batman dates a woman, Batwoman dates a woman, and they both fight crime, corruption and inner demons.
Besides, my spies tell me that lesbians read comics, graphic novels, ride skateboards, stunt out on BMXs and surf and, are deadly gamers. Lesbians also make comics, write graphic novels, design boards and games. (Yes, I am a nerd).
I like nerds, always have. My favourite nerd? Dr. Sheldon Cooper of Big Bang Theory fame,
he is the quitessential Nerd. I’m not a nerd, can’t do science and don’t read comic books.
I’m just a soon to silver haired, bookish butch:-)
I’ve read a lot of fan fiction, not for a long time, but, my favourite used to be Detective Olivia Benson and ADA Alex Cabot, wow, some major hot stuff,
there seems to be no limit to the lesbian fan fiction writer’s abilities to read ‘sub-text’ goes with the whole starving for recognition thing don’t you think?
My all-time favourite real time, real world nerd is Mme. Curie.
Oh I love her:-) When I was in third grade I read a biography, done for kids,
since then I have loved her,and Rachel Carson, and Margaret Mead and Jane Goodall and Diane Fossey,
I don’t consider them nerds, they are examples of smarts and perseverance examples for all.
