It is a beautiful day,
still tired,
but,
hey,
this too shall pass:-)
The Habs, won.
YES!!
Very busy day,
yesterday,
but,
I got a nice present,
from a customer,
customers gives me present,
must be because of, my natural charm, and devilish grin:-)
Anyway,
this customer I did,
something for him,
he’s been reading in English,
something,
he hadn’t really done,
before,
and he asked me if,
I would pronounce,
certain words,
on tape,
for him.
I did warn him,
that my accent,
was not exactly,
language lab,
he doesn’t hear it,
besides,
everyone,
has some sort,
of accent,
it’s a question,
of,
perspective,
and,
degrees,
I think.
So, yesterday to thank me,
he didn’t have to, it represented five minutes of my time,
he brought me a,
modern library,
edition,
of Cakes and Ale,
by my man,
Maugham.
I am tickled pink.
I turned him on,
to Somerset Maugham,
a couple of years ago,
as well as,
modern library editions,
so it was doubly,
pleasing,
and,
appropriate.
I like the editions,
from the,
forties and fifties,
they are a perfect,
size,
and,
weight.
They are bound,
and stay open,
and they are easy,
to read,
not too big,
not too small.
I am not a collector,
I just love books,
it’s not about value.
This gift,
was the best part,
of my workday,
not much pleases me, more than a book.
when,
I got home,
something,
delightful,
awaited,
but,
I won’t tell you,
about that,
a butch,
has to keep,
some things,
secret,
and to herself.
Have a great day.
Later girls,
BB
First, I love books too…as my packed bookshelves will attest. But what of technology? Dare I say, eReaders? The gift of a book is wonderful. What though of the gift of space- I’m just sayin’….:-)
As a reader I have no problem with e-readers, space, portability etc, also prevents all those self-help books from the 80’s and other organic chemistry textbooks ugh ,from ending up in landfill, and cheaper:-) As a used bookseller and a lover of the tactile, I am on the fence:-)
I’m starting to think that BB has something against self-help books…hmmm, exactly which books fall under the umbrella of self-help?: ‘Every Woman’s Guide to Cycling’, ‘Mindless Eating’, ‘The Simple Living Guide’, ‘Switch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard’, ‘One Small Step’…Surely, not these?! It’s not that I have read these cover to cover, in some cases twice or anything…I’m just wondering which fit the self-help profile so that I can make sure that none of my friends or such read these…you know, protect them from the evil influence…:-)
Housekeeping: How do I get italics?
I used to make fun of the hugeness of all science books…mostly ’cause I didn’t have to carry them. Now, not so much! Last semester, Microbiology and Human Anatomy & Physiology…I’m convinced that the profs. purposely chose books not available on eReaders….:-) Oh how I miss the halcyon days when all I needed for class was a paperback!
Italics is next to bold, well it is for me. I’m not totally against self-help books, I liked Everything I Need to Know I learned In Kindergarten,
I’m against, the fact that, some people read one book every five years, and they pick a How I went To Kuala Lumpur and it changed my life, my complexion and brought me to Nirvana. But, it could be worse, the book they choose to read every five years, could be from the works of Dan Brown. I like all books, for info, for entertainment, for enlightnment, for stimulation, all books, I’m not crazy about change your life type books, seems a little bit easy:-)
I’ve never read any Somerset Maugham.
Really? I love him, but, you know I just started reading him 3, 4 years ago, old stuff lying around the bookstore. If you want to try some I suggest Cakes and Ale or his short stories, there are many and he is a master of the genre. Let me know, if you like or not. Nice to hear from you:-)
I’ve only read one self-help book, “Changing Bodies, Changing Lives.” My edition is so old pages are starting to fall out. I’ve loaned it out to many young friends. Come to think of it, I don’t think I got it back the last time. If you know any adolescents or young teens, it’s a good book to leave lying around where they might happen to notice it and take a peek. Just sayin’…
Noted, into the vault it goes:-)
