Hope and Love

My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.

These are the last words,

Jack Layton,

wrote to Canadians.

Impressive.

How often do you hear,

the word love,

from a politician.

I tell you,

for me,

it was,

the first time.

I am sadened by the death,

of Jack,

I didn’t know him,

personally,

but,

I felt like I did.

There was something,

about him.

People felt close to him,

he was a guy,

with a smile,

and a hopelessly,

unfashionable,

mustache.

His favourite song was,

Imagine,

brave- in a jaded world, where optimism and hope and the expression of sentiment has become- suspect and passé.

The people of Québec,

voted massively,

for Jack,

in the last federal election.

We were criticised,

even laughed at.

Told by the national,

and,

local Media,

that we were,

at best,

ridiculously naive,

and,

optimistic,

at worst,

lazy and,

uninformed,

but,

I think,

it’s much more,

basic than that,

we were willing,

to give Jack,

a chance.

Hope was,

better than fear,

it still is,

and will remain that way.

Jack appeared,

on Québec’s most watched,

French language television show,

Tout Le Monde En Parle,

you want to get the pulse,

of what’s going on in the world,

and our little part of it,

you watch this show.

A kitchen table,

discussion,

on Sunday nights.

Quebeckers,

are kitchen table types.

Jack spoke to us,

in a good, accented,

French and we listened,

and voted.

Before the vote,

some of our so-called,

intelligentsia,

seeing the NDP rise,

in the polls,

tried to put,

Jack and his team,

down,

comparing him,

to a used car salesman,

it was the wrong tactic,

made him,

seem even more,

one of us,

a real guy.

Jack got a massive,

majority in Québec,

and elected some,

brilliant,

dedicated,

involved,

Members of Parliament,

Sure, some of them were token candidates who never expected to win, does that make them less qualified than career politicians? I don’t think so:-) besides, every party has their share of embarassing back benchers, just like every family has black sheep and excentrics.

My point is,

Jack was about,

Hope and Love,

and we must never give up,

Hope for fear,

and,

Love for Anger,

this is our Country,

and,

our World,

and we must toil,

to make them better.

For the memory,

of Jack,

and,

others,

for the optimists.

Hope and Love,

four letter words,

that say it all:-)

monday morning musings

It’s a cloudy,

blustery day,

perfect day,

for laundry,

on the,

clothesline,

fluttering away,

being infused with,

oxygen.

Mom’s been washing,

since early,

she has a method,

and,

it’s best,

not to interfere:-)

Unfortunately,

we couldn’t make,

the play last night,

it poured,

buckets.

Stayed home,

and,

watched,

John Adams.

Couldn’t possibly,

say enough,

good things,

about that series,

if you are interested,

in history,

in politics,

in people,

who bring real change,

to the world,

it’s a series for you.

One of the things,

I liked most about it,

is the depiction,

of the deep,

love and friendship,

of John and Abigail Adams,

partners,

lovers,

friends,

they depended,

on each other,

who wouldn’t want,

an Abigail,

as an advisor,

a strong shoulder,

an attentive ear,

a love unconditional,

inspiring:-)

I went to,

the library,

yesterday,

and took,

out a volume,

of Janet Flanner’s,

Paris Journals,

it covers the years,

1944 to 1965,

many writers,

refer to Flanner,

as an inspiration,

and someone,

to read,

I like memoirs,

and journals,

these are more,

columns,

she wrote for,

The New Yorker,

for many years,

I love,

The New Yorker,

you all know that:-)

Big book,

will take a while,

I’ll keep you,

posted on my progress,

through it.

Some,

very sad news,

this morning,

the leader of,

The New Democratic Party,

and Official Leader of the Opposition,

Jack Layton,

died at his home,

last night,

he was a nice man,

who brought,

hope and optimism,

to the often,

tired,

democratic process,

our country will miss,

his voice,

his charm,

his enthusiasm,

Godspeed Jack.

Let’s hear it for a kinder gentler way of talking politics

Yesterday sucked,

rain,

wind,

and,

the Habs lost,

2-1 after,

92 minutes,

that’s almost,

two overtime periods,

anyway,

it is what it is,

shit happens,

and,

today is another day.

wow, three cliches in a row, if I don’t watch it I might turn into a politician:-)

I’m a little worried that,

cockiness,

might have jinxed,

my Canadiens,

but,

hey,

I don’t,

really believe,

in jinxes.

That being said,

I am very happy to report,

that the NDP,

is on the rise.

The weirdest part,

they are higher than,

the Bloc,

here in Quebec!!

Unheard of,

and yet,

it’s true.

Yesterday,

a good friend,

of mine,

attended a political rally,

for Jack Layton’s NDP,

at the theatre Olympia,

in Montreal’s gay village,

the heart of Duceppe’s riding.

Thirteen hundred people,

the largest political gathering,

in Québec in this federal election,

the NDP,

are usually also rans,

in Québec,

not so,

this time,

it would seem.

OK, let me explain briefly, the Bloc Québécois, is a Québec nationalist party, Gilles Duceppe is the leader of that party. The New Democratic Party, has traditionally been Canada’s third party, social democrats, a little bit leftist, not to be confused with communists in any way. Jack Layton is their leader.  The Liberal Party, historically, has been Canada’s governing party, but, they have been plagued in recent years by, corruption scandals and lackluster leaders. Their current leader is Micheal Ignatieff.  The Conservatives, lead by the squarest of squares, Stephen Harper, are who Canadians usually elect when they are mad at the Liberals. We have had three minority Conservative governments in a row. Canada doesn’t really have a tradition of minority governments, in the past we have had a few. Spurred by the NDP, important changes were brought forth, including our medicare system.

The Bloc for all their,

uselessness,

has effectively,

blocqued,

a conservative majority,

by,

being the representatives,

of most Québec ridings.

But, in this election,

people seem to want,

a change,

from Liberal cynicism,

from Conservative,

fear and hate mongering,

and,

from Bloc,

bluster,

full of sound and fury,

signifying not much,

perhaps,

Jack Layton,

shows a softer, kinder side,

of Canadian politics,

a man and a party,

that,

get us back to be being,

Canadians,

polite, kind,

with a conscience,

about the world,

and core values,

about our environment,

our history,

our future,

a true North,

strong and free.

It’s nice to think so.

I hope so…

Have a great Easter,

it’s a beautiful day here,

and I hope it is wherever you are.
