Coping with Winter Blues

It’s been a rough week,

everything.

The weather,

has gone,

from bad,

to,

Shit:-)

Cold, gray, snow, freezing rain,

oh yeah,

BAD.

The Habs are on a losing streak,

bad season,

mega bad season,

uber bad season,

bad season to end,

all bad seasons,

you getting the picture??

So, after a long ,

none too fruitful,

day at the bookstore,

a hockey game brings,

more a dread feeling,

than,

a solace to the weary soul.

Yes, girls,

you’ve guessed it,

it’s January!!

Once all the feel good,

holiday spirit,

has gone by,

it’s back to,

short grey days,

chapped lips,

grumpy broke people,

who want to sell you books,

and what you want,

is to,

SELL some.

My friend,

busy writer says,

this is the hard part,

but,

that we Canadians,

know,

that what helps,

survival,

is,

good food, good friends and good books:-)

So,

I’ve having some,

peanut butter toast,

with strawberry jam,

and,

writing to my girls,

about the excellent books,

I’ve been reading.

Anne Lamott’s,

Travelling Mercies: some thoughts on Faith,

has as usual,

made me think,

kept my interest,

and marvel at her,

craft,

her ability,

to tell a story,

her story,

with such truth.

She doesn’t disappoint:-)

I’ve put Lady Chatterly”s Lover,

on the back burner,

not because,

it isn’t good,

but,

because,

I fear a ‘happy ending’,

may not be,

in the cards,

so to speak.

On my last library visit,

I took out,

A John Dos Passos memoir,

that I have found,

disappointing,

I think Dos Passos,

is one of those writers,

I would like to like,

like Kerouac,

wow that’s a lot of likes <wink>

they seem,

so cool,

so smart,

but,

they just aren’t,

for me.

In the last six months,

or so,

I have gotten more,

satisfaction,

from Brittish writers,

some exceptions, Lamott, Malamud and Stegner all very satisfying

The book I’m reading now,

is Good-bye To All That,

by Robert Graves,

a memoir of his childhood,

and,

his participation in World War I,

it is filled with,

unvarnished truth,

but,

told in that,

very matter of fact,

and,

humourous flip way,

that the Brits,

master.

Memoirs fascinate me,

but,

they can be tedious,

this is not.

Maybe, the fact,

that I spent a couple of weeks,

immersed in 19 th century history,

when I read my friend,

Francoys’ biography of Peter Kropotkin,

made me want to explore,

stories of late nineteenth,

early twentieth century,

I’m not sure.

The first World War,

remains an vastly unexplored,

territory,

for me,

and it fascinates me.

Who knows,

maybe this will be the Winter,

I learn more about it.

So, what are you all doing to cope,

with Winter blues?

Later girls,
