It’s a gorgeous day.
I’ve had a very social weekend,
well,
for me:-)
Dinner and scintillating conversation,
on Saturday,
at Francoys,
the anarchist.
Got home,
really late,
make that,
early,
mom was miffed at me,
the next day,
she wouldn’t say,
I had to drag it out of her,
she was worried.
When I mention,
that there is nothing,
to worry about,
that I can evaluate risk,
and,
that honestly,
walking home at,
3h30 is no riskier than midnight,
and,
that I have a cell phone,
and,
I don’t really offer a vulnerable target,
she gets angrier.
oh well,
she’s over it,
and she needs to be,
I won’t sacrifice,
what little social time I have,
to irrational fears.
I think mentioning the cell phone,
and,
that if I was worried I would take a cab,
helped,
we’ll see next time.
It annoys me that she reacts,
that way,
I am a responsible adult,
and,
I don’t take silly risks,
I have lived in this city,
my whole life,
and,
in this neighbourhood,
my entire,
adult life,
I know,
the lay of the land,
but,
I also know,
she worries out of love.
I just can’t and won’t,
let her turn me into a teenager,
we must respect each other’s,
space and independence,
while understanding,
each other’s fears,
fine line.
It’s hard not to react,
by saying,
‘But, mom, I’m forty-seven years old!!!’
I imagine,
plenty of adults who share,
accomodations,
with parents,
and,
or sibblings,
experience similar things,
the key as in all,
relationships,
if you want them to be successful,
is to communicate,
and,
occasionally,
compromise:-)
So that was Saturday,
on Sunday,
I went to my ex’s,
for dinner,
she made a lovely,
turkey stew,
and an,
oatmeal apple cobbler type thing,
delicious,
healthy,
and,
we did what we usually do when,
we have dinner,
talked a little,
ate a little,
and,
watched a movie,
she hasn’t been able to ‘tape’,
Howl,
but,
last week,
we watched,
a very good Clint Eastwood movie,
about J.Edgar Hoover,
starring Leonardo Di Caprio,
sidebar: I’ve heard negative things about the way Di Caprio looks, some people even saying, he’s gone to seed, gotten fat etc. Personally, I like the way he looks, better. He looks like a man, not a adolescent, and he has become a fine actor. Herrein endeth the, sidebar.
Last night,
we watched,
an even better movie,
Beginners,
with Christopher Plummer,
and,
Ewan Macgregor,
if you haven’t seen it,
I recommend it,
quite highly,
in fact.
Hal (Plummer),
is a seventy-five year old man,
who after becoming a widower,
comes out to his son,
Oliver (Macgregor).
He lived his life,
as a married heterosexual man,
for over forty years,
out of love and devotion,
to his wife and child,
they weren’t very happy,
they weren’t miserable,
but,
now,
he no longer wants,
to be a hommosexual in theory,
as he says.
It’s a wonderful story,
of a son and father,
finally becoming close,
well closer,
finally understanding things,
about each other,
trying to communicate,
after all this time.
Both Plummer and Macgregor,
are very good,
and,
the female supporting characters,
as well,
it’s a multi-layered story,
about being gay,
about,
how our parents relationship,
informs,
our own,
and about the things we do,
to comform and to live,
a ‘normal’ life,
and,
lots more,
a movie,
that will leave you thinking,
about lots of things.
I like that,
if you do as well,
check it out.
Be well,
all of you.
Later girls,
BB
When I was very young (late teens) I filled in as a care-giver helper for some older folks. It was a mother in her late 90’s, her daughter (late 70’s) and son-in-law (early 80’s). Quite the household. One day the daughter was off to the grocery store and the mother called out, “Dorothy! You’d better take a sweater!” Dorothy replied, “Mother, I’m 77 years old! I know if I need a sweater!”
It never ends…
My mom found the story hilarious.
I don’t know if I should laugh at that anecdote or cry…I think I’ll laugh….
I really want to see “Beginners”.
It’s very good, well worth seeing, multi layered and sensitive, with a male point of view that isn’t often represented, plus the dog is a scene stealer:-)
