The youth of the world

It is a glorious morning,

sunny,

bright,

breezy,

and

airy,

as in there is air,

to breathe,

hasn’t been much of that,

lately,

oxygen.

Quote of the day on the Gazette, got me thinking

“The important thing in life is not to triumph but to compete” Pierre De Coubertin

The Olympics start,

in a few days,

yeh, yeh, love the Olympics,

and,

everything they should,

stand for,

the beauty and health of youth,

participation and dedication,

competition,

the importance of losing and winning,

with grace,

sport,

as an international language,

a means of bringing people,

together.

I’ll admit,

I’m a bit of a homer,

Mark Tewksbury,  Olympic gold medalist and Canadian chef de mission Olympic team 2012. A winner, an example an out and proud Gay man.

The Brits have been criticised,

for spending too much money,

on security,

and having too much army presence,

I find that incredible coming from,

countries like Canada,

how much did Toronto spend on the G8 a few years ago?

The U.S.,

the war on terror, the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan etc.

I’m not militaristic,

but,

I want our athletes and delegations safe,

I trust the Brits will do this,

with class and reserve,

fingers crossed.

🙂

So, for the next few weeks,

I’ll be watching,

the youth of the world,

assemble,

in one of the worlds great capitals,

for sport,

for beauty,

for peaceful,

aspirations.

Go world go:-)

***I realise this is a  naive vision, a very privileged ‘western’ vision, I am what I am. I believe, in reaching for a better, more peaceful world***

  1. I agree with everything you say except that I don’t think all sport, even Olympic sport, is the domain of youth. For some sports , the prime age is a bit beyond ‘youth’, where experience and exposure and economy of movement count for much when facing the competition. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my part 🙂

  2. You are absolutely right:-) The Olympics are not the exclusive domain of the young, even in a broad sense, they probably never have been. Take our own wonderful Clara Hughes, she will be competing in her sixth games
in London, she is also the only athlete ever to have won multiple medals in both Summer and Winter games. We see more and more athletes who compete well into their forties, not only Olympic athletes either, even the NHL has a few over forties. Our girl Clara will be forty in September. At the end of the Games at the closing ceremonies, they call ‘upon the youth of the world to assemble in four years’ Perhaps we need to revisit the word youth. Thanks as usual for your thought provoking and informed feedback:-)

  3. Silly me. I was defining ‘youth’ by chronological age alone when clearly there is much more to it.
